When I was little, only nine years old, my old golden retriever, Max, died. He lived a good, long life and was the sweetest dog. At 12 years old, he had to be put down because of cancer. I thought I'd never get over his death. From the day I was born, he was there, and with me. But then came along this fluffy, spunky mutt, and her shyer, slightly aggressive litter-mate. We found them at an animal shelter, and instantly fell in love. They were only 6 or so months old, and the pups were going to be put down because no one could take both of them, and they could never be separated. These two dogs had a truly special bond. And that day, we found ourselves taking home these two wonderful dogs.
Gracie was a spunky, outgoing dog who was completely friendly. She'd give you a big wet kiss first, ask questions later. She was really a character, and had this personality that made everyone, even the biggest cat-people, love to be around her. Gracie was a gray, long-haired Bearded Collie-wolf hound mix, and her sister, Roxy, a more timid, untrusting dog who's wolfhound side showed more, was a wirey-haired black and white beauty.
Gracie and Roxy brought life back into my family as only a loving, loyal dog can. They were always the life of the party, especially Gracie. Where Roxy was a bit gruff and slightly aggressive, Gracie always seemed to do the right thing to comfort someone. Everyone who met her loved her.She was playful, kind, and had an extreme sense of humor.
And It was amazing, the bond between Gracie and Roxy. They loved each other like I never thought any two animals could. They were sisters by blood, but also by heart, and had an ever-lasting friendship that touched everyone who saw them together. Those two dogs taught me a lot, and they really inspired me.
Two years ago, Gracie was out in the yard. Around one o'clock, my mom came home and let the two out for a few minutes, while my brother and I were still at school. Two dogs began to bark from next door, and Gracie got excited. She leaped excitedly at the tall fence that parted the yards. Her coller snagged, and she hung herself. By the time my mom noticed, coming down from up stairs, Gracie was gone forever, and I came home to find my dog, my baby, gone forever, and before I even had a chance to say good-bye. It was an untimely death. Gracie was only three years old. Everyone, not just my family and I, were devastated. The spunky dog that livened up the neighborhood would never be seen again, trotting around on her leash, giving everyone she passed a friendly lick.
But most of all affected was Roxy. The two had been truly inseparable, and was extremely depressed by her sister's death.
Now we live with two dogs again, our new one being a small Skye terrier mix called Odie. Odie looks a bit like Gracie, and some have even mistaken him for her puppy. Odie is a worthy successful, and has his own personality. Everyone's happy again, but Gracie will never be forgotten. She was truly an angel from heaven.
Rest in Peace, Gracie.
